Brittany Herzberg:
All right, we are back with McKenzie. If you caught her episode on the main podcast, the simple and smart SEO show we're over here on SEO shorts, because we wanted to get a little bit more information from her. And just so you know, there is going to be a video available because we're going to actually walk through some screenshare thing. So crystal Mackenzie say hi, Leah Yes, I'm going to be very professional and give Mackenzie the host ability so she can share her screen with us. All right. So
Mackenzie Armstrong:
when you are looking for keywords for ads, and things like that, so even if you're not doing ads, you can still find keywords this way as well. In the backend of your account at the top, you're going to hit ads, and you're gonna hit create a campaign. Now, don't be afraid if you're not creating a campaign, it's totally fine. It's not going to do anything unless you publish it. And if you don't have any money towards it, it's not going to do anything anyway. So you're golden. When you're doing ads, I always like to do consideration ads just because I think you'll get the most bang for your buck. So we're gonna go to continue at the bottom. Here, you want to look at interests and keywords. There are two things you can have keywords. So there's interests which you can look for interest. So like, say, education. So these are all the the top interests that are about education. But then we can go to keywords. And so over here on this bar here search, we're going to say, education. So these are all of the keywords that come for education. Now, ideally, I like to have my range, like so over here on here is a scale. So when you start adding words, so you can click the plus sign, and it'll add your whole list, which is great, because then you can just copy and paste it into a spreadsheet if you need it later. The more you add words, and over here, it tells you the reach. So education quotes gets 500k to a million searches monthly. I like to have my searches over here like this scale, be between eight and 10,000. Because you don't want it to be too big to where it gets lost in the shuffle. But you still want it to be pretty honed in now if you have something super specific it can be well smaller for your audience reach. Okay, I
Crystal Waddell:
just want to say if you're not watching the video right now, she's talking about the potential audience size of your ads. So that's different from the monthly search volume of the keyword.
Brittany Herzberg:
Yeah, and I like how they have this slider bar over there that wasn't there the last time that I used it. So I really liked that.
Mackenzie Armstrong:
Yeah, it's great, because then it kind of relates helps you hone in. And if you're doing an ad, you want to have, like 100 keywords. Oh, wow. So you kind of want to have a lot. I like to start broad to see what's happening. And then after three weeks, I'll go in and see what's hitting well, and then I'll narrow it even more from those, and then I'll get rid of the ones that are costing me money. So say I had education in there. And then you can always add more. So this is a 10k. So educate. So that didn't make my thing fluctuate. So if you've got really low down, and of course I picked one that's like super high. So education, Math has 1000 a 10k. So now my scale has changed. You can use this as a way to find keywords for anything. So in education. So now I'm gonna get into more specifics. Now on elementary, I can add elementary keywords to I've typed elementary into my keyword search. So let's add I'm not music. So let's say I'm not quotes, let's say I'm an elementary school teacher, because I want to hit those people. I'm in an elementary classroom, I'm not going to talk about books, because maybe I'm doing math. So let's do maybe elementary decor, because I might have a math bulletin board that I want to sell. So now I'm up to 35k to 39k. So I want to kind of hone that down a little bit. So let's get a little bit down here. I'm doing that. So let's do that. So this is a tool that you really want to use to hit all of those key topics that you're talking about either in your blog post and what your ad is for, or in general for your account. So I like to start here also from optimizing and account for the entire concept of what the blog or podcast is about. And you kind of get keywords and then I'll categorize them in a spreadsheet. So that way I can just go to the my spreadsheet and click that because these are more broad and then I'll also go into. So I'm going to switch screens over here. So let's do math. Elementary. I just had two math elm in here. So I might hit math elementary here. So I can use math elementary as a keyword. And then I can use all of these bubbles, math, elementary teaching math, elementary activities, math, elementary classroom, project based learning math, elementary, special education, math Elementary. So that's 123456, maybe if I'm doing writing seven, so that's seven other keywords that I can use and entwined within my ad for keywords, and then also in my descriptions, because don't forget that even though you have a place in your ads account, for your ad to create, to put like keywords, you still want to use those keywords within your description as well, because that's also
Brittany Herzberg:
searchable. Gotcha. So quick question because like, can you go back to the other tab where you were doing a keyword research? So like, let's say, I'm in here, and you said that you use this to optimize an account that you're starting to work with? I do SEO, I have like stuff where I talk about social proof, case studies, etc. Like, if I wanted to go do this for myself, would I type in each of those words, grab some of the keywords for each one, and then I could copy that whole list. Okay.
Mackenzie Armstrong:
Yep. So like we can, let's have these. And then all you have to do, highlight and copy. And it'll copy right into an Excel spreadsheet or sheets if you use sheets. And then what I like to do is, I like to create section. So like, I might do all SEO, and then for this example, purposes, like education, and then I might do like just specific education, and then teacher, and then math, education, and then elementary math. And then the next step, so I'd take each section, so that way you can go in and you have a bank to pull from. But ultimately, when if I do a new podcast, I'll take specifics from the actual podcast, because you know, as a podcaster, you have specific things you want to hit, but you might not have hit all of them. You didn't mean so you can go in and listen to the podcast or look at the transcript and say, Well, what key things that we actually talked about in this even though it might not have been everything that we wanted to talk about, but what key things that we talked about, and put those key topics in your search bar and use that to help drive your keywords because that's going to be something that's going to be relevant to your audience like you hitting that specific topic might be something they might not need 80% of that podcast. But if you're talking about that, one thing that they want to know about that you're going to be able to hit that that keyword when they're searching.
Brittany Herzberg:
I love it. Cool. Well, thank you so much. We're gonna put all of we tried to make these like super short and just like knock it out of the park.
