LinkedIn Episode
Crystal Waddell:Hey guys so what I'm seriously so excited about with this episode is this is a bonus for me as well.
Brittany Herzberg:You know it's crystal let me
Crystal Waddell:I had to go like work or something you know. But yeah, I miss this conversation with Selena young Selena young and be had an amazing follow up conversation to our LinkedIn episode and that is what we're sharing with you today behind the scenes at its finest.
Brittany Herzberg:Oh yeah, we are and I have a presentation. So if you're listening to this, just know that there's going to be for sure a video component to this. Let me I guess I'll just like share your talk, and then I'll share my screen. So I had selfishly like crystal said, after we were done recording, we were all kind of chit chatting. And then sadly, Crystal had to go and do client things or like she said, whatever, like work and stuff. And I had a selfish question for Selena because I have not figured out how to master hashtags on LinkedIn. And my goodness, that I learned that it is like the complete opposite of Instagram, like everything you think you know about hashtags, if you're an Instagram fanatic, like I am, dude, totally different, totally different ballgame, just like toss those instructions out the window. So a couple things are important to note. One is that you're going to need to turn on creator mode in order for this to work. And I learned the hard way, I don't think you can do that on desktop, the way I had to do it was to download the app and to turn creator mode on on the app. Once you do that, I think you can actually do some, you know, tweaking and playing around on desktop, but download the app, the LinkedIn app. And then when you go to your profile, you'll see some stuff, you'll see some settings, I think as you scroll down on your profile, you actually see creator mode. And if it's off, you just can toggle that on. So that's important thing to note, number one. Number two is that that's where you add these hashtags. And Selena has a specific process for creating these hashtags. She gave me all of the good information. So I'm going to share that with you shortly. And not only do you have these hashtags on your profile, so that your profile is essentially tagged and findable. But then you're going to use those same hashtags, wait for it, the same hashtags, on all of your content. So that even that is findable. And if someone were to, I wonder, I didn't ask this clarifying question, but I wonder if someone were to type in all of those hashtags. If it makes like all of your stuff, findable? Okay, let me actually share things.
Crystal Waddell:Okay, so can you tell me where this places to figure out like if you've got a creator account? Uh huh. Please hold because I'm following along, trying to do this as well. And I'm like, oh,
Brittany Herzberg:okay, so you get on the app. And it's downloaded, you're logged in your face your profiles in the upper left corner. So we're gonna click that UK file. And then we're gonna scroll down. Okay, so it's like the third block where it says resources.
Crystal Waddell:Oh, view Pro. Yeah. Okay. I want to go settings. Okay. My creative mode is actually on.
Brittany Herzberg:So that's great. Okay, perfect. I'm hoping I'm pointing at the right thing. Creator mode. When it's on, it says on and it's green. That's what you want. Because when you have that, you're gonna have these lovely little hashtags
Crystal Waddell:in here. Oh, yeah. Okay. Yep. Hopefully, that
Brittany Herzberg:text came out correctly, where you could read it, if not, my apologies. But that's what we're aiming for here. So creator mode is on. And now we're going to figure out the hashtag. So you want a total of five. Let me share my screen before I forget to share my screen. These are the hashtags that I have, and I will highlight them to do so to get these five wonderful hashtags, Selena, like I said, she has a system so you want four popular hashtags. You don't want them to overlap. So I would not for example, want to say copywriting and then have the next tag be hashtag be SEO copywriting. I would want to stick with something about SEO stick with something about podcasting stick with something about copywriting. So they're, you know, very different pillars. They're four popular hashtags. The way you know, that they are popular is you actually go to search in the search bar. You know, I started and I was like, okay, hashtag, SEO copywriting. If they show up, and you see a number, that's great. You want that number, that search number at the top to be more than 10,000 follows. And actually, like, I was kind of like, okay, more than 10,000 Instagram logic right for my brain. I said, 12,000 is good. Nope. Selena looked over my work and she was like, go for this when it has 140,000 I was like, oh, so the bigger the better. Yep, the bigger the better. So try to find ones that have more than 10,000. And if you see a really big number you want to be in there. So for example, if you
Crystal Waddell:Okay, yeah. Sorry. So how do you see that number? Because like I typed in SEO and the search on the app, and I don't see a number.
Brittany Herzberg:So okay, this is perfect. This happened to another friend of mine that I told about this. And she was like, nothing's coming up. There's no search results. That means that is not a viable hashtag. It's not findable enough. I know, I know. It's very sad. Totally blew my mind to really Yep. Yep. I'm just giving an example. I don't know the number of this. If you do hashtag SEO, copywriting. And it comes up with like, 1042. That's good. But it's too small. If you type in like SEO copywriter, and nothing, no result shows up and sorry, again, that's hashtag SEO copywriter, and nothing shows up. It's not viable. Let me if you want to, like talk through some stuff on demo stuff on here.
Crystal Waddell:Okay, so I typed in SEO services. And just just so you know, I didn't type in hashtag word first, I just typed in the word. So that was my first problem. But the hashtag has 1780 followers. Is that the same thing? As is that the number that you're talking about? Correct, right there?
Brittany Herzberg:Correct. Again, if you're looking at the screen with us, I just typed in hashtag Search Engine Optimization. It says there's over 290,000 followers, this is a very good one. That number is very high. For anyone that's thinking with Instagram logic, you're like, oh, my gosh, I gotta run away, because I'm gonna get lost in here. But for LinkedIn logic, we want this one, the one that that you just said, it's like 1000, something would be too small.
Crystal Waddell:So we want at least 10,000. But the bigger over 10,000, the better.
Brittany Herzberg:Yeah, man, you got it. Wow. So then fun, it will be fun. So you want four of those, four of them that are over 10,000 Bigger, if you can get it, you want each of the four to tie into a different category, different content, pillar, different bucket, I'm trying to say it in different ways, so that it's hitting home. And then the fifth hashtag that you have, you want it to be custom, you want it to be one that is all yours. So if we go back to look at my profile, these are the you can select up to five, these are the five that I have. I've got podcast, because, you know, I mean, podcasting is sort of important. And I really like it. And people are finding me and Crystal this way. I SEO expert, because you know, I've got that status. Now, copywriting because it's what I do content marketing, because case studies fall under Content Marketing. So then this last one is my custom one, copy by b, that is my business name. That is my logo that is like what I want to hashtag it as. So this is not going to be used by anybody else. Or it shouldn't be used by anybody else. Unless you're like, I don't know, I'm making this up, you come up with like a three day challenge. And you say, Hey, everybody, do like hashtag copy by be as you're participating. And then you can go see like everybody participating. And that's pretty cool, right? But the point here, you want that to be a custom hashtag.
Crystal Waddell:Could it be just your name? Yeah, I could have done hashtag sweaters.
Brittany Herzberg:Berg, you could do crystal lotto. You could even do for example, if you wanted to lean into collage and would you could do hashtag collage. And would I remember now the friend that I was talking with was Erin Alola. Because she's trying to be more active on LinkedIn. And I was like, let me help you be successful. I know this tip now. So we were talking through her hashtags. And I love her podcast name is top copy to me. So I was like, do hashtag talk copy to me. And she was like, Oh, my gosh, I love that. I was like, I know. So anyway, that's what she ended up with. Okay, so that's all of like the how to do it. But if you're looking at the screen, what I want you to see is like, these are my five hashtags. These are where they live on my profile is up here. And they also all five, always go on every single piece of content that I'm going to put out because it is just, it makes it more findable. And also just Lena said to do that. So
Crystal Waddell:that's so cool. If you're watching the video, you also saw that B has a video in her profile. And I'm sure that's not exactly what we're talking about. But how do you do that?
Brittany Herzberg:I saw your eyes go over there. I was like, I know she's gonna ask me. You do that again on the app. So it's a 32nd video. I had to do a script. I normally try to do everything just like very free flowing. But when I'm doing a video and I'm on a time limit, I'm like, I gotta know what I'm saying. So I introduced myself I shared a little bit about my offers shared a little bit about like, who I am and how I can help people Oh. And I was like, in and out and I gave a call to action at the end of it where I said, if you have any questions, let me know or just say hi or something like that. So you have to have the app. And I recorded the video outside of the app.
Crystal Waddell:I'm just wondering like, you have 500 followers. Oh, and then like, I don't like I don't have 150. Well, the reason why I'm saying that is that I'm only laughing and the way you said it. Yeah, that there's creator tools that may not be available to you until you have at least 150 followers. So like, oh, there's an audio event and LinkedIn live and newsletters, which is something else that Selena talked about. So I just wanted to make that note, because there may be some things that might not be visible or available. If
Brittany Herzberg:got it. That's good to know. Because I don't know what I don't know. I'm very much learning LinkedIn, but working on slow who you are where you have,
Crystal Waddell:I'm close. I'm at 137. So if you're on LinkedIn, come vote me for it to 150. Yeah, I could. Let's be friends over on LinkedIn, Crystal Clark Waddell, your friendly, helpful SEO content expert and UX researcher in training.
Brittany Herzberg:She's Oh, and you're going to totally help me with a project in early 2023. And I am so excited.
Crystal Waddell:Yes. So. Okay. Now, one follow up question. Just really quick back to this word. Underneath your title, where it has depends on SEO, the bolts stuff. You have your hashtags, yes. And then underneath that in the gray, it says providing services. So are those things related? Or I don't know. I don't think with that. Okay.
Brittany Herzberg:I don't want to go down that rabbit hole because I have no idea. And I know that we talked longer than our normal.
Crystal Waddell:But okay, sorry. I'll start it's fine. This is when I'm not there. You know, you know, I'm
Brittany Herzberg:gonna know there's so many questions. I'm like, Oh, we're just gonna have to have Selena back. I mean, yeah, look, it's frozen, frozen. That was perfect. That was perfect. Okay, so go do some discovery with your hashtags. I would love if you would share in the thread with us. Which five you're going to share? Or even if you just want to tell us like, Hey, this is my custom hashtag. Just let us know. We'd love to go be friends with you over there. Have you as friends over there? What do you think Crystal? Is that good enough? Homework? Yeah, we
Crystal Waddell:can grow together. So I think that sounds perfect. Awesome. Thank you be.
